I was privileged enough to work with Jaime Garrett and Amy Gallup in creating a mock wedding reception with photographer, Stephanie P. It was a great and amazing experience! Check it out by clicking here.
married!

I've got to get better at blogging on here!
Well, I was just married to the most amazing man in the whole world, and I am now kim denny! I had the opportunity to do all of my own wedding flowers, so I jumped. It was wonderful and perfect and I couldn't have asked for a more amazing event. My sister, Tiffany, executed many of the flowers beautifully. Without her, it would have fallen apart. I am so excited to see the pictures from our wedding and to put them up here! View my wedding page here.

Life is crazy!
Tiffany and I started up "Blush", our own design company specializing in wedding floral design. However, I am not sure of my plans currently on returning back to Chicago! Tiffany and I had two contracts this last year with Jessica and Spenser and Heather and Tom. It was wonderful and exhilarating to create and execute all of our ideas.
In two weeks, the Spring Floral and Bridal Open House will happen, and I'm nervous! Jaime and I have been co-directing it from the beginning. We chose the theme "I Stand All Amazed" and each room is treated as a different "wedding reception/other special event." I think it will all come together, but it still makes me nervous because there's only so much we can do to oversee the event! However, it's all very exciting. Check back to see pictures soon! And wish us luck!

my first wedding
july 11, 2010
On June 21, 2010, the bride-to-be, Maria Pedroza, asked if I would help with her wedding flowers. What started out as twelve centerpieces, quickly turned into me designing one bridal bouquet, one toss bouquet, six bridesmaid's bouquets, five bouts, three corsages, seventeen centerpieces, and a few large arrangements for various tables and focal points. I had never been so excited and nervous in my life. The time passed quickly by, as the ceremony was only 3 short weeks away, July 10th.
The adventure was fulfilling, thrilling, and exhilarating! Friday morning, my sister and I set off to the Vans Chicago Wholesaler, purchased hundreds of dollars worth of flowers- including freesias, roses, lisianthus, bells of ireland, billy balls, hydrangea- and checked into the Hilton on Michigan Ave. There we began processing and designing all afternoon and into the evening. By midnight we had completed the task and were ready for the early morning set-up time of 5:30 a.m. Maria was married to Kyle Barnett in the Chicago Illinois LDS Temple, had a beautiful Ring Ceremony at Piper Hall, and finally a reception at Carnivale Chicago. Congratulations to Kyle and Maria! And it was a great opportunity!

eight weeks down, two more to go
march 16, 2010
I only have two more weeks left on Kauai, and then it's back to the mainland! I am trying to take as much out of this experience as I can with the time I have left by pushing myself to take responsibility. It hasn't been too busy around here lately, so I've had more opportunity to be more creative! I've taken on the "lily grass challenge" where I am adding lily grass to every arrangement-- I've figured out a lot of ways to be more creative with different materials! If you notice an obscene amount of lily grass in my designs, this is why!
Kauai is really great. I've also been able to explore the area a little more and in my free time, I've learned to surf, gone swimming in massive hotel pools, got to know great people, ran along the beach, collected seashells, and picked more tropical flowers than I ever thought I'd see. I am going to miss it here, but it will be nice to get home! With only two weeks left, I am trying to cram everything in!

valentine's day madness
february 14, 2010
To the world, Valentine's Day means a day of spending time with the one you love. To a florist, Valentine's is known as one of the craziest days of the year. Over 2,000 roses later, Valentine's is over, the rush has ceased, and the phones have stopped ringing. Most flowers arrived Tuesday evening (around 5) and this is when it all started. With our team of 7 people coming in shifts, we were able to process the boxes and boxes of flowers. We even finished by 11. I learned through this holiday that catching up is nearly impossible. As I worked mostly at the farm with Carol, there were 3-5 people managing the store located downtown Kalaheo. Staying up late and waking up early were brought to a whole new level when bedtime was 3 and the phones started ringing by 7. I have to say, I got a TON of experience though. I am so glad I was here to help during this time because I learned so much. I made dozens of dozen rose vases and many spring bouquets. I was privileged once again to help with a funeral too. I didn't realize what crazy was until this last week, but I made so many new things and got to really stretch my creative ability. Am I glad it's over? Yes. Will I do it again? Definitely.
kalaheo, hi

It is simply magnificent here. I am busy at work and have finally gotten a chance to update! I love it here in Kauai! The weather, the flowers, the beaches, the people, the attitude- it is all wonderful! I am living with the Kimura's, Carol, my internship boss, and her husband, Merv. They are great people and are teaching me so much. They own acres and acres of "farm" where they raise their own tropical plants, so aside from learning to design with typical flowers, I am also getting great experience using tropicals which we harvest ourselves! They grow everything from indian head to ginger to all varieties of heliconias. There are two shops in which I work- the farm shop, Kalaheo Flowers & Gardens, located on the property where all of the tropicals are handled, and the downshop, where the floral shop, Kalaheo Flowers is located. I spend time at both locations learning techniques using all types of materials.
With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I am both excited and nervous for the busiest time of year! More pictures will definitely follow.

internship
december 16, 2009
Come January 18, 2010, I will be arriving in Kalaheo, Hawaii for a 10 week long internship. I have never been so excited to do anything in my life. I really feel as if this internship will give me an opportunity to stretch my abilities to my full potential. When I first joined this major, I was very interested in event planning and weddings, but the more I learn and the more I grow, I don't think it's actually the direction I want to take. This internship will really give me a feel for owning my own business and give me greenhouse experience- plus take me out of the cold, Rexburg winter! Goodbye negative temperatures, and hello beach!
